- Cover. Thai time, explained. The Thai word เดี๋ยว (dǐao). "In a moment"... but how long is a moment?
- The formula. Read what's around เดี๋ยว. เดี๋ยว + verb = in a moment: เดี๋ยวมา (dǐao maa), be right back. เดี๋ยวก่อน = wait!: เดี๋ยวก่อน (dǐao gòn), hold on! verb + เดี๋ยวนี้ = right now: ไปเดี๋ยวนี้ (bpai dǐao níi), go right now. เดี๋ยว + X + เดี๋ยว + Y = X, then Y: เดี๋ยวร้อนเดี๋ยวหนาว (dǐao rórn dǐao nǎao), hot one minute, cold the next. เดี๋ยว + bad result = or else...: เดี๋ยวตกรถ (dǐao dtòk rót), you'll miss the bus. Most of the time it just means "soon". How soon is another story.
- Meaning 1: in a moment, I'll... soon. เดี๋ยวมา (dǐao maa), Be right back. เดี๋ยวโทรกลับนะ (dǐao thoo glàp ná), I'll call you back. เดี๋ยว + verb = I'm about to do it (in theory).
- Meaning 2: wait! Hold on. เดี๋ยวก่อน! (dǐao gòn), Wait a second! เดี๋ยวนะ (dǐao ná), Hang on a sec. เดี๋ยวๆๆ (dǐao dǐao dǐao) = "wait, wait, wait!" when something's going wrong.
- Meaning 3: now, these days. ไปเดี๋ยวนี้ (bpai dǐao níi), Go right now! เดี๋ยวนี้ไม่ค่อยกินเผ็ด (dǐao níi mâi khôi gin phèt), These days I don't eat much spicy food. At the end: right now. At the start: nowadays.
- Meaning 4: one minute... the next... เดี๋ยวร้อนเดี๋ยวหนาว (dǐao rórn dǐao nǎao), Hot one minute, cold the next. เดี๋ยวดีเดี๋ยวร้าย (dǐao dii dǐao ráai), Nice one minute, nasty the next. Perfect for the weather, moods... and exes.
- Meaning 5: or else, you'll end up... รีบหน่อย เดี๋ยวตกรถ (rîip nòi, dǐao dtòk rót), Hurry up, or you'll miss the bus. ใส่เสื้อหนาวด้วย เดี๋ยวไม่สบาย (sài sûea nǎao dûai, dǐao mâi sa-baai), Wear a jacket, or you'll get sick. Every Thai mum's favourite warning.
- Meaning 6: later, then. เดี๋ยว (in a bit) + ค่อย (then) + verb. เดี๋ยวค่อยกิน (dǐao khôi gin), I'll eat later. เดี๋ยวค่อยคุยกัน (dǐao khôi khui gan), Let's talk about it later.
- Everyday phrases. See you soon, just a sec. เดี๋ยวเจอกัน (dǐao joe gan), see you soon. Literally: "soon + meet each other". เดี๋ยวเจอกันนะ (dǐao joe gan ná), See you in a bit! แป๊บเดียว (bpáep diao), just a sec. Literally: "a flash + single". รอแป๊บเดียว (ror bpáep diao), Wait just a sec.
- Reading trap. One little mark changes everything. With the ๋ mark, rising tone: เดี๋ยว (dǐao), a moment. No mark, mid tone: เดียว (diao), single, only. คนเดียว = alone. ครั้งเดียว = just once. แป๊บเดียว uses เดียว too: "one single flash".
- Quick recap. เดี๋ยว in one slide. เดี๋ยว + verb = in a moment. เดี๋ยวมา = be right back. เดี๋ยวก่อน = wait! hold on. เดี๋ยวนะ = hang on (softer). เดี๋ยวนี้ = now, these days. เดี๋ยว...เดี๋ยว... = one minute... the next... เดี๋ยว + bad result = or else... เดี๋ยวค่อย... = later, then. เดี๋ยวเจอกัน = see you soon. เดี๋ยว ≠ เดียว = moment ≠ single.
